Did you know that you can do the Way of St. James in Mallorca? The truth is that, being the most important pilgrimage point in the country, there are many walkers who put on their boots and start your trip to Galicia, from the place where they are, even from the Balearic Islands!
From Roig, your trusted car rental company in Mallorca, we want to explain all the secrets about this centuries-old route so you can enjoy the Camino de Santiago in Mallorca.

What is the Way of St. James in Mallorca ?

The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela can be started from various points of the country, even from France. But there is a somewhat special route, which requires you to cross several kilometres of the Mediterranean Sea in order to continue walking. This is the Camino de Santiago de Mallorca, or the way of Saint James in Mallorca, in English.

But where does the Way of St. James start in Mallorca? This pilgrimage route starts at the Lluc Sanctuary in Escorca and ends in Palma, where it connects by sea with Denia, where walkers can continue their route.

The stages of the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago de Mallorca do not end when they reach Palma, but when the ferry docks in the port of the Valencian Community. It is there where pilgrims can go to stamp their compostelana claiming to have just completed the first section of what is known as the Camino de la Lana (Wool way).

In the beginning this route was one of the least known, because of the complication of having to sail across the sea. But in recent years, the Camino de Santiago de la Lana is becoming a unique experience for pilgrims. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to visit different historic points of the island, which will offer you spectacular views of Mallorca.

Advantages of doing the Way of St. James from Mallorca

There are many benefits that you will find when you decide to do a route of the Camino de Santiago. You will return home with a tired body, but with an awakened mind and clearer ideas than ever. In addition, you will take with you an experience in which you will have shared everything you have with other people and you will feel united with them forever.

However, deciding to do the Camino de Santiago from Mallorca has many other added benefits, which are presented below:

You will connect with nature

The Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago de Mallorca starts at the Lluc Sanctuary. This is a monastery that belongs to the municipality of Escorca and is located in the middle of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, the most important massif in Mallorca. Your route, therefore, will begin at an altitude of around 400 metres.
The Virgin of Lluc is the patron saint of Mallorca and, consequently, this is one of the most important religious sites on the island. This is why it has a botanical garden with more than 200 different species of plants from the Balearic Islands. So, the starting point of this experience will be nature itself.

You will find out more about the history of Mallorca

The Sanctuary of Lluc and the route of the Mallorcan Way of St. James are one of the main starting points for walkers, hikers, cyclists, etc. This is a route full of Catholic dedication and miracles that tells us, through its stones, the history of the largest Balearic island.

At the end of the 14th century, 7 stone crosses were erected along the route, representing the seven miracles performed by the Virgin and Patron Saint of Mallorca, on this island.

You will have many different experiences

The entire Way of St. James is an authentic natural spectacle, where you can enjoy the wildest landscapes, but some of them take the prize. This is the case of Majorca.

Along the stages of the Mallorcan route you will have the opportunity to completely break your routine, contemplate amazing views, pass by some of the most important monasteries in the country and get to know some of the most interesting plant and animal species on the island.

It will help you to know yourself

This is one of the main advantages in any of the routes of the Camino de Santiago that you choose, so Mallorca is not excluded. The best way to do the Camino is alone, although if you are accompanied by others, we recommend that you take time alone to connect with yourself and take care of yourself from within.

Activating the body in such a powerful way as you do on the Camino de Santiago, allows your mind to be completely free and clear. If you do good introspection work, you will begin to discover things about yourself that you didn’t know before. All you have to do is give yourself enough time and space to think about yourself, which is hard enough in our busy day-to-day lives.

Stages of the Way of St. James in Mallorca

The ideal starting point for the Way of Saint James is the Sanctuary of Lluc, as it is a very important religious site on the island, although this route can be started almost anywhere you choose. The Camino de la Lana has a total distance of 60 kilometres and, although each pilgrim can choose the number of kilometres they want to do in each stage, we are going to recommend the traditional division so that you can do the route in 4 days
