DON’T MISS THE MALLORCA CHAMPIONSHIP, THE NEW TENNIS TOURNAMENT IN MAJORCA

Despite being the birthplace of the best Spanish tennis player of all time and one of the best in history, the Manacor born Rafa Nadal, Majorca does not have any ATP tournament. A paradox that will be solved next year with the arrival of the Mallorca Championship, a grass tennis tournament that will be held from June 20 to 27 at the Santa Ponsa Country Club, in Calvià, in the same courts where Nadal has trained and where he won his first ATP match in 2002.

This championship will be part of the ATP Tour 250 men’s circuit and will hand out 900,000 euros in prizes. In addition to having Rafa’s native land as the main setting, the second male tennis player with the most Grand Slams – at the time of writing these lines, only Swiss player Roger Federer surpasses him with just one trophy – another of the attractions of this competition is that it will serve as training for athletes to prepare for their participation in Wimbledon, the most important grass tennis tournament in the world and the third Grand Slam of the season.

The Mallorca Championship, whose launch was announced a few days ago, will take the place of the Antalaya tournament, Turkey, which in 2019 celebrated its third and last edition. By seizing the organization of this event, Majorca has managed to beat Sweden and Milan, the other applicants who fought to organize this sporting event. This will also be one of the eight ATP tournaments on grass and one of the five – along with those of Stuttgart, Hertogenbosch, Eastbourne and Newport – that will take place on this surface.

In addition, from 2020 onwards, it will be the third event of the ATP Tour calendar in Spain, together with the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell-Conde de Godó Trophy, which takes place at the end of April at the Royal Tennis Club of the Catalan capital, and the [ATP] 1,000 Madrid, which is celebrated shortly after, in May. Thus, Majorca recovers an ATP Tour tournament after 18 years, since it came to host one between 1998 and 2002.

To date, the Country Club had hosted a category 250 tournament of the WTA Tour (women’s). However, in the absence of official confirmation, everything suggests that there will not be an upcoming edition in Majorca. Berlin is emerging as the new destination for this test.

The grass tennis tournament in Calvià: this is what the Mallorca Championship will be like

Mallorca Championships will be played by 28 players in singles and 16 doubles couples. However, confirmation on whether Rafa Nadal will be among the participants will not be confirmed until shortly before the beginning of the competition. In fact, the Majorcan player usually flies to London a week before the start of the Wimbledon tournament to adapt to the All England Tennis Club court. To maintain this custom, his trip to the United Kingdom would coincide with the Mallorca Championship. There is no doubt that the surname Nadal will be linked to the tournament, since its director will be the last winner of the United States Open’s uncle, Toni Nadal.

We must also bear in mind that, in addition to Nadal, Majorca is the land of another tennis player who has reached the top in the ATP classification: Carlos Moyà. As a professional player between 1995 and 2010, Moyà reached number 1 on March 15, 1999, becoming the first Spaniard to achieve it in the Open category (in female category, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario got it in 1995). One more reason that reinforces the strong link between the best tennis and Majorca.
